“Arti dello Spettacolo/Performing Arts”, n° 8, 2022, numero monografico “Donne e impresa teatrale”

Call for Papers 2022

The 8th issue of the journal “Arti dello Spettacolo / Performing Arts” will be dedicated to the Women and Theatre, and aims to rediscover and enhance the history of women in the field of theatre studies.
Over the centuries, the artistic and technical-practical contribution of women in the creation and realisation of theatre productions has often been marginalised and women’s careers hindered, with the exception of a few personalities who have excelled.
As far as gender studies in the field of theatre studies are concerned, there has been an interest in redeeming above all the role of some emerging female figures. Attention has focused more on actresses, and even more on divas, on the exceptionality and singularity of some careers, often neglecting the valuable contribution of minor characters, who have remained in the shadows.
From a methodological point of view, this approach to the study of the history of women in the theatre has produced a system of prejudices and “counter-prejudices”, feeding the creation of a “minor” theatre history, the female one, which is therefore marginal.
Recovering the contribution of these still little-known women actresses and impresarios and inserting as merited into the history of the theatre would provide a more accurate account of the events, laying bare the social, political and cultural dynamics of the time that they had to face in order to establish themselves.

The present issue aims at discovering the contribution of women in the theatrical field from the 17th to the 19th century, highlighting the female presence with a different mode of narration and critical-methodological analysis. The aim is to overcome the split between the commonly known history of theatre and a history of gender, focusing on equal cooperation, highlighting its problems, redefining processes and events also in the light of the recent contributions of gender history.
The focus will be on impresarios, directors, playwrights, actresses, set designers and women who, in different ways, have played a significant role both in the process of creating and realising a theatre production; and in the dynamics of the corporate structure of a theatre company or enterprise. Attention will also be placed on solo careers in order to understand the difficulties encountered and the strategies adopted to affirm and implement their own alternative vision in the creative process of a theatre production.

Special attention will be paid to the following topics:

  • women impresarios, directors and company managers;
  • women in the theatrical enterprise, with particular attention to those female careers that have played a fundamental, even if unrecognised, role in the enterprise or structure of a company, as well as in the creative process leading up to a performance;
  • solo careers: women entrepreneurs of themselves;
  • collaborations: problems and/or synergies created in view of a theatre production, difficulties in asserting or implementing one’s feminine vision;
  • collaborations: problems and/or synergies with colleagues, directors, actors, set designers, etc., in the phases of the creative process, performance and realization of the theatre production, highlighting the difficulties in affirming or implementing one’s own feminine vision;
  • from gender theatre studies to theatre history: methodological proposals.

Call for Papers 2022

  • le donne impresarie, registe e direttrici di compagnia;
  • le donne nell’impresa teatrale, con particolare attenzione a quelle carriere femminili che hanno ricoperto un ruolo importante, anche se non riconosciuto, nell’assetto societario o nella struttura di una compagnia;
  • le carriere soliste: donne imprenditrici di se stesse;
  • le collaborazioni: problematiche e/o sinergie con i colleghi, registi, attori, scenografi ecc., nelle fasi del processo creativo, performativo e di realizzazione della produzione teatrale evidenziando le difficoltà nell’affermare o attuare la propria visione al femminile;
